France Training plane

in flying condition

-History

The birth of the SV4 goes back to 1937 when Elsa Leysen, one of Jean Stampe flying school trainee pilot, contact the latter : She wishes a light aerobatics aircraft higher to Tiger Moth and Bücker Jungmann. In 1933, Stampe and Vertongen had built the S-IV (become SV4 thereafter). The aircraft consisted of a top positive sweeptback wing staggered to the front and a bottom wing, straight, equipped with ailerons. The prototype took-off from Deurne in 1933. On the basis of the SV4, ingineer Demidoff draw a new aircraft characterized by a shorter fuselage, a new empennage and a reduced wingspan. The wingframe, with meaner wing section, was equipped with wing tips, the two wings equipped with ailerons, despite their dissymmetry. The prototype called SV4-B, flew on september 1937, equipped with the Gipsy Major I inverted engine of 130 ch. Winner of the contest for basic training aircraft for the Belgian Army, it was finally delivered to its owner, Elsa Leysen, with whom it took part in many meetings and appeared definitely higher than Tiger Moth and Jungmann. Still wishing to perfect this plane, Stampe built a second and third SV4-B in particular improved by the adoption of symmetrical wings with positive back sweep. This new SV4-B was presented in France in 1939 and there cause sensation. France then placed an order for 600 aircrafts whose construction was to be ensured by the Farman company which acquired of the licence. Because of the war, only 20 SV4-B were completed in Deurne. 11 aircrafts were then in the course of assembly in the Farman factory in Turenne. The shortly after the hostilities, French authorities choose the SV4 to start again the Armée de l'Air flying schools. Equipped with the Renault 4Pei engine of 140 ch, then available, the 1st SV4-C took the air in January 1946. The Ministère de l'Air ordered 700 aircrafts. The Stampe saga in France had just started.
During its career the aircraft will be equipped with various engines since Renault 4P, 4P-03, 4P-05 for aerobatics(SV4-A), 4P-106 injection engine, to Mathis 7 cylinder radial engine of 175 ch , which equipped the SV4-D prototype of Patrouille d'Etampes.

-Production

The SNCAN ensures the production in Sartrouville of the 1st of 700 ordered aircrafts. The first one come out on june 4, 1945 with a Gipsy engine. The first serial produced SV4-C with Renault engine come out in october and carries the n 13. The production ends in april 1948 with n 701.
The need for this aircraft type remains, the French State entrust the construction of 150 additional SV4-C to the Maison Blanche's Atelier Industriel de l'Aéronautique in Algiers. The first production specimen comes out in May 1947 and the last in 1950. These aircrafts, numbered from 1001 to 1150, will be famous for the quality of their manufacture.

-Career

The Stampe had many users during his career :
The Armée de L'Air, which used at least 243, within different school bases from 1946 to 1955. The École des Officiers de Réserve in Caen, separates some in 1960.
The Aéronautique Navale fait flew at least 123 SV4-C between 1949 and 1966 within Escadrilles Écoles 50S and 51S in Lanvéoc and Khouribga (Morocco) naval bases, as well as in Escadrille de Liaison et de Servitudes 3S in Cuers base.
The ALAT* (30 aircrafts) from 1953 to 1960, in particular in Carcassonne, Mayence, Nancy and Dax bases.
The Patrouille d'Etampes, from 1947 to 1953.
The CEV, 50 aircrafts, for civil servants training. They will undergo some modifications for experimental ends, like the test of the Matra "Magic" missile in 1974 in Cazaux.
The Service de l'Aviation Légère et Sportive, from 1948 to 1969 (100 aircrafts).
As well as the aero clubs and private individuals for whom it still flies, for the pleasure of the pilots and... spectators.

CAEA's specimen
serial number The CAEA Stampe has an eventful life. It comes out of factory in september 1946, carries n 322 and born F-BCON. It's a SV4-C type (4-PO3 engine) and begins its career at SALS in Sens until 1955 when it will be struck off. In 1964 it's equipped with a 4-PO5 and transformed into SV4-A but the certification is not granted. In september 1965, it becomes F-BBON and flies in the aero club Snecma Sports in Romilly until 1970. Then it will change of owner 5 more times, receives a new 4Pei engine (becomes again SV4-C) before we purchase it in september 1998. It joined our collection flying in March 1999, in Andernos. The airframe has 2210 flight hours.

The plane flew again on May 1st, 2007.

Visible at Bordeaux-Léognan-Saucats (LFCS) airfield.
